Here the composer\u2019s longing for simplicity and his nostalgia for the \u201cold style\u201d, which in fact permeates all his oeuvre, are expressed with admirable logicality. They are aided in this by their instruments: Euler\u2019s (uncredited) viola is marvelously rich and colorful, from the bright sheen of a violin to the emotional density of a cello; Rivinius\u2019s century-old Steinway D is clean and clear, with none of the heavy reverb heard in the bass of modern Steinways.
